New System Developed by WRG Goes Beyond Government Mandated Two-Factor Security Protocol
Wescom Resources Group (WRG) has signed five credit unions to use its two-factor authentication solution. Unitus Community Credit Union, Tinker Federal Credit Union, 66 Federal Credit Union, San Antonio Federal Credit Union and South Carolina Credit Union have selected WRG's security identification tool, which goes beyond the government mandated two-factor security protocol and gives members an increased level of protection from computer hackers.
One of the main features of WRG's two-factor security solution is its ability to block key logging, a method where hackers can track keystrokes in order to gain access to member accounts. WRG's solution requires members to choose answers to security questions by selecting them from a drop-down box. Later, when the member is prompted to answer a security question, it is presented in a multiple-choice format, and the member clicks on the answer they provided. Since the member never needs to type the answer, key logging is not effective.
WRG's solution does not require members to answer the additional security questions every time they log into their account. While questions will be presented at random intervals, for the most part questions are asked only when user activity is unusual. On the fly, WRG's solution monitors security risk factors, such as using a different computer, logging in from a different country, or using a different Internet provider, and prompts the member with a security question if these or other risk factors are present. These features set the WRG product apart from many other commercial solutions, and strike a balance between enhanced protection and convenience.
"WRG has developed a solution that not only complies with The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) regulations, but gives our clients' members the ability to conduct their online banking with enhanced security and without unnecessary intrusion," said Kevin Sarber, president of Wescom Resources Group.
The two-factor security protocol was mandated by FFIEC, which requires by January 2007 that all online banking providers must prompt for a second authentication whenever a user's online banking session meets a pre-defined set of criteria.
